Historical Figures Bulgaria Khan (King) Kubrat

Khan Kubrat {Kurt, Hor Bat or Kuvrat} was born around 585-600 AD. He was of the Dulo clan, from the Unogondurs tribe of Bulgars. In 632 Khan KUBRAT unites politically all Bulgarians and their akin tribes of the Azov and the Caspian sea. In the struggle against the Western Turkic people their khans are forced to recognize the supreme power of KUBRAT and this act practically marks the foundation of GREAT BULGARIA a.k.a. Bulgaria Magna.
The Byzantine chroniclers Teophan and Niciphorus write that Kubrat bequeathed to his sons the principle of preserving unity - “In order for them to rule everywhere and not be slaves to other people.”

There is a legend saying that as the Khan was dying, he ordered his sons to fetch a bundle of sticks and told them to break the bundle in two. When none of the sons managed to break the bundle, the Khan took the sticks and broke them one by one with his feeble hands.
The sons understood their father's message: their strength depended on their unity. The Byzantine chroniclers Theophanes and Nicephorus wrote that Kubrat's bequest to his sons was to preserve the unity, "so that they would dominate everywhere and never become other peoples' slaves".

We can only estimate when Kubrat was born, but we know that as a child his uncle Organa sent him to study in Byzantine. After Kubrat’s death (around 668) his five sons ( Batbayan, Asparukh, Kotrag, Altsek and Kuber) had to decide what to do. Staying together meant that only one would get to be the great Khan. They didn’t listen to their father’s advice. Thus they decided to separate and seek their fortunes independently. They split the Bulgars into five hordes which was a big mistake. In less than five years the Khazars defeated the Bulgarian country after conquering its main territories.

Bulgarian Students about the visit in Belgium

IMPRESSIONS OF OUR STAY IN BELGIUM

ANZHELO – class 9a
First I was little afraid, everything was new for me, but I was sure that everything will be great. This trip was full of emotions and surprises from the first moment. This was an emotion, which everyone needs to experience.  We were different people, but we were sharing everything with others. Now everything is different we have new friends, we have new feelings. Everything in my host family was great, they were like my own family for five days.
Working on the board game was really funny, because now we know we can work in groups and we know that we can do everything with a little help of friends. The tours were great experience, too. All in all, I will never forget this trip.

GERGANA – class 9a
From the first day, the emotions from the airport and meeting the students from the other countries in the hostel in Leuven, all this showed me that this will be an unforgettable journey with incredible emotions and experiences.
The architecture of the buildings in Belgium is amazing. It is very clean everywhere and people are very friendly whether they know you well or not. Well, I had few bad moments but I quickly forgot them. Walking on the ancient streets, seeing the magnificent cathedrals, feeling the sea breeze, working on the board game with all students and teachers, laughter and fun at any time were one of the greatest experiences in my life. I will never forget the hospitality, warmth and patience of the people around me.
I would like to thank all the teachers and students that made me part of this incredible journey. I will never forget it!

I have had a great time with everybody . It was so funny to me. Even the stay in the family was more than wonderfull they were taking care of me as if I was their own child, and they were trying everything to be perfect for my stay. It was great emotion, and in the end I didn't want to leave.
Thank you for everything! :)
